Veteran actress Saba Hamid got trolled online after an earnest attempt to promote the use of native languages turned into an ironic spectacle.
In a lengthy post, the Noor Jehan actress passionately urged people to teach their children their mother tongues, warning that neglecting native languages could lead to their extinction within the next 20 years.
She took to her Instagram to write,
Speak your native language to your children or watch it die within the next 20 years. Looking down on your relatives who speak your native tongue because you speak perfect English is stupid. It is like being proud of borrowed clothes.
Ironically, the last part of the statement made Saba Hamid seem like she was telling everyone to wear shalwar kameez while dressed in jeans.
One user quipped, “Irony that this post is in English 😂,” while another took it a step further by responding in Urdu, highlighting the contradiction: “حالات کی ستم ظریفی تو دیکھیں کہ مقامی زبان بولنے کی تاکید فرنگی زبان میں کی جارہی ہے 😂”
Another comment read, “آپ نے بات بہت آچھی کی لیکن ہنسی اس بات پر آرہی مجھے کے اِنگلش میں کیوں بولا یہ🤣” (Translation: “You made a very good point, but I find it funny that you said it in English🤣”).
Yet another user humorously questioned, “Ap ki native language English hae ?? 😂😂”
While Saba Hamid’s message about preserving native languages was well-received, the medium she chose inadvertently became the punchline
