Hailing from the Hyogo prefecture, northwest of Osaka, the Japanese man has trained his body and mind to function optimally on this absurd viral life hack. He credits his ability to stay awake and alert to a combination of physical activity and caffeine. “As long as you do sports or drink coffee an hour before eating, you can stave off drowsiness,” he explained.

Hori’s philosophy centers on the quality of sleep rather than quantity. He argues that individuals requiring sustained focus, such as doctors and firefighters, benefit more from high-quality sleep than extended rest periods. This approach has not only fueled his daily routine but also his participation in the “Best Body Japan” competition, where he showcased his athletic physique.

A glimpse into Hori’s life was captured by Japan’s “Yomiuri TV” for the reality show “Will you go with me?” Over three days of filming, Hori demonstrated his unique lifestyle, including a day where he slept for just 26 minutes, waking up naturally and energized.

In 2016, Hori founded the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association, where he has reportedly taught over 2,100 people to adopt ultra-short sleep habits. One student claimed to have reduced her sleep from eight hours to just 90 minutes daily, maintaining excellent skin and mental health.

Despite Hori’s claims, health experts remain skeptical. The National Institutes of Health recommends at least seven hours of sleep per night for optimal health, warning of adverse outcomes like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease from chronic sleep deprivation.
